About the Role

Provide Emotional Support:
Offer empathetic listening and encouragement to individuals facing mental health or substance use challenges.
Share personal experiences and recovery stories to help others feel understood and supported.

Promote Recovery:
Help clients navigate their recovery journey by sharing strategies and coping mechanisms.
Assist in setting and achieving personal goals related to health, recovery, or wellness.

Facilitate Peer Groups:
Lead or co-facilitate support groups, workshops, or educational sessions for individuals in recovery.
Create a safe, supportive environment for group members to share experiences and provide mutual support.

Advocacy and Empowerment:
Empower clients to advocate for themselves in both personal and community settings.
Provide guidance on how to access services, resources, and community programs.

Provide Guidance on Life Skills:
Support clients with everyday life challenges, including job searches, managing finances, or building healthy relationships.
Offer guidance in developing coping strategies and problem-solving skills.

Maintain Confidentiality:
Ensure the privacy and confidentiality of clients in accordance with ethical guidelines and organizational policies.

Collaboration:
Work closely with other healthcare professionals (e.g., therapists, case managers) to ensure holistic support for clients.
Participate in care coordination to help clients achieve their recovery goals.

Requirements

  • Education:

    • Generally, a high school diploma or GED is required

    • Completion of specialized peer support training (often through a state-certified program) may be required or preferred.

  • Experience:

    • Lived experience with mental health challenges, addiction recovery, or other relevant life experiences is crucial.

    • Experience working in a peer support role or in the mental health/addiction recovery field is often preferred but not always required.

  • Skills:

    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

    • Active listening and empathy.

    • Ability to build rapport and trust with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

    • Good organizational and time management skills.

    • Compassionate and non-judgmental attitude.

    • Resilience and the ability to manage personal emotions when supporting others.

    • Patience and understanding, as the recovery process can take time.

  • Ethics & Professionalism:

    • Maintain professional boundaries and adhere to ethical guidelines.

    • Have an understanding of confidentiality laws and regulations (e.g., HIPAA)
