About the Role

Assessment and Diagnosis:

Conduct thorough assessments of individuals' substance use and mental health history.
Diagnose substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions.
Develop individualized treatment plans based on assessment findings.
Provide Counseling and Therapy:

Offer individual, group, or family therapy to clients struggling with addiction.
Use various therapeutic techniques (e.g., Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behavior Therapy) to help clients develop coping strategies and work toward recovery.
Work with clients to address triggers, cravings, and relapse prevention.
Treatment Planning:

Develop and implement treatment plans with measurable goals for clients.
Reassess treatment plans regularly to ensure progress and adjust as necessary based on client needs.
Work collaboratively with clients to establish recovery goals, and engage in long-term recovery planning.
Crisis Intervention:

Respond to crisis situations, providing immediate intervention to individuals experiencing acute substance use issues or related crises.
Ensure the safety and well-being of clients in crisis, potentially referring them to higher levels of care if necessary.
Case Management and Referrals:

Coordinate with other professionals (e.g., physicians, mental health counselors, social workers) to ensure holistic care.
Help clients access community resources such as housing, employment, medical care, and additional mental health services.
Monitor clients' progress and adjust referrals as necessary.
Educational and Preventative Services:

Provide educational services to clients and their families about addiction, treatment options, and coping strategies.
Lead group therapy or psychoeducation groups to build skills in managing addiction and developing healthy behaviors.
Documenting and Reporting:

Maintain accurate and confidential client records, including assessment results, treatment plans, progress notes, and discharge summaries.
Ensure compliance with legal, ethical, and regulatory standards in all documentation and reporting.
Advocacy:

Advocate for clients’ rights and needs, working to reduce stigma surrounding addiction and promote access to recovery resources.

Requirements

  • Education:

    • A master’s degree or higher in a related field, such as counseling, social work, psychology, or addiction counseling.

  • Licensing and Certification:

    • Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist (LCAS) credential is required. The specific licensing requirements vary by state but generally include:

      • Completing a state-approved addiction counseling program.

      • Acquiring significant supervised clinical experience (usually 2-3 years).

      • Passing a licensing exam.

      • Maintaining continuing education to keep the license current.

  • Experience:

    • Typically, 2-3 years of clinical experience in substance use counseling, therapy, or addiction treatment is required.

    • Experience working with individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders is highly preferred.

  • Skills:

    • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

    • Ability to use a variety of therapeutic modalities to treat addiction.

    • Strong assessment and diagnostic skills.

    • Ability to work effectively in both one-on-one and group settings.

    • Knowledge of ethical standards and confidentiality laws in addiction counseling (e.g., HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2).

    • Completion of continuing education requirements for license renewal.

  • Knowledge:

    • A strong understanding of addiction theory, treatment modalities, and recovery models.

    • Familiarity with community resources for substance use treatment and recovery support.
