About the Role

Assessment and Evaluation:
- Conduct thorough assessments of clients to evaluate their substance use history, behaviors, and mental health status.
- Identify the severity of substance use disorders (SUD) and co-occurring disorders (e.g., depression, anxiety).
- Develop individualized treatment plans based on assessment results, client needs, and personal goals.

Provide Counseling and Therapy:
- Offer individual and group counseling to clients struggling with alcohol and drug addiction.
- Use evidence-based counseling techniques (e.g., Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, - - Dialectical Behavior Therapy) to help clients understand their addiction and work toward recovery.
- Provide ongoing support and motivational encouragement throughout the recovery process.

Treatment Planning:
- Develop and implement comprehensive treatment plans with measurable goals for clients, ensuring that their treatment plans are regularly updated to reflect progress and evolving needs.
- Help clients set personal goals related to recovery, wellness, employment, and rebuilding relationships.

Crisis Management:
- Respond to clients in crisis situations (e.g., overdose, withdrawal, or relapse).
- Provide immediate support and intervention, including safety planning and referral to higher levels of care if necessary (e.g., inpatient rehab or detox centers).

Education and Prevention:
- Educate clients and their families about the nature of substance use disorders, recovery strategies, and healthy coping mechanisms.
- Provide information on relapse prevention and strategies for maintaining long-term sobriety.
- Facilitate prevention programs and educational workshops to raise awareness about addiction and promote healthy choices in the community.

Referral and Case Management:
- Assist clients in accessing additional resources such as housing, employment, healthcare, and support groups.
- Coordinate care with other professionals, such as doctors, mental health counselors, and social workers, to ensure comprehensive treatment.
- Monitor clients’ progress and provide follow-up services to ensure continued success in their recovery journey.

Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date client records, including treatment plans, progress notes, discharge summaries, and any communication with other service providers.
- Ensure compliance with confidentiality laws and ethical guidelines (e.g., HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2) in all documentation and interactions with clients.

Ethical and Professional Standards:
- Maintain high ethical standards, ensuring that clients' rights are respected and that all interventions are in the clients' best interests.
- Adhere to all state and federal regulations regarding substance use treatment, and ensure compliance with industry best practices.

Requirements

  • Education:

    • A high school diploma or GED is typically the minimum educational requirement, although an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, counseling, is preferred.

    • Coursework related to substance use disorders, counseling techniques, and behavioral health is required.

  • Certification:

    • The most important requirement for this role is the Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) certification, which is issued by various professional organizations (e.g., the National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) or the International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC)).

  • Experience:

    • Typically, 2-3 years of supervised clinical experience in substance use counseling or addiction treatment is required.

    • Experience in individual and group therapy, case management, and crisis intervention is preferred.

  • Skills:

    • Strong communication skills: Ability to effectively communicate with clients, families, and other professionals.

    • Active listening and empathetic understanding: Ability to connect with clients and understand their experiences and challenges.

    • Problem-solving skills: Ability to assess situations and develop appropriate treatment plans and interventions.

    • Crisis management and relapse prevention strategies.

    • Knowledge of addiction treatment methodologies and relapse prevention strategies.

    • Cultural competency and ability to work with diverse populations.

  • Personal Attributes:

    • Patience and resilience, especially when supporting clients through difficult situations or relapse.

    • Strong ethical standards and professionalism.

    • Ability to work independently and in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.

    • Ability to manage and maintain boundaries with clients, particularly in challenging therapeutic relationships.
